News from the HL-LHC machine (and lessons learnt for future collider projects)

Abstract

Abstract Operation of CERN’s present flagship project, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), will come to an end in June 2026. After many years of successful operation in its current configuration since its startup for high-energy collisions in March 2010, the LHC will be transformed into the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) configuration during the 47 months of Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). Series production of the components required for the HL-LHC project is currently in full swing, and the project is currently preparing for the transition into the deployment phase in the LHC tunnel and newly built underground galleries. In this paper we present the present status and outlook of the HL-LHC project, as well as lessons learnt from this major international endeavor that will be applicable for future projects of the High-Energy physics community.
