QUALIFIED EMPIRICISM: Science Honoured Within Its Domain

Abstract

Abstract The relationship between empirical science and theological knowledge has been framed predominantly through two inadequate paradigms: conflict models that subordinate one to the other, and independence models that isolate them into incommensurable domains. Both fail to account for the stratified character of reality. An earlier paper in this research programme (Maiywa-Masai, 2026l) demonstrated, through engagement with John Lennox's critique of atheistic naturalism, that science itself presupposes non-empirical conditions of intelligibility, rational trust, lawful regularity, and mathematical describability, that cannot be grounded by empirical method alone. The present paper builds upon that foundation by articulating Qualified Empiricism as a standalone systematic treatment within the Metadisciplinary Knowledge System™ (MKS-Thronaxis) framework. The term "Qualified Empiricism" replaces the earlier "stratified empiricism" per the MKS™-Thronaxis Harmonized Terminological Prolegomenon, §5.2 (MMasai, 2026g). It designates a posture that honours empirical science's genuine epistemic authority within its proper domain (Stratum I: Created Material Order) while denying its sufficiency across all four Ontological Strata. Operating through Grid I (Empirical-Scientific Method), Qualified Empiricism constitutes the first of Empirical Metadisciplinary Theology's (EMT™) three operational pillars. Where the earlier Lennox Paper diagnosed science's dependence on Stratum-transcending epistemic conditions using the pre-harmonized "Tier" vocabulary, the present paper reformulates and extends that diagnosis within the fully harmonized Three-Term Rule grammar: Strata for ontology, Axes for epistemology, Grids for methodology. The Three-Term Rule stipulates that Ontological Strata (horizontal layers of being) belong exclusively to Thronaxis Cosmology, Epistemic Axes (vertical modes of knowing) belong exclusively to Hierarchical Epistemology, and Methodological Grids (domain-specific procedures) belong exclusively to EMT; no term crosses its designated domain (MMasai, 2026g, §6.0–6.4). The argument demonstrates that respecting science's domain is not anti-science but anti-reductionism: the refusal to permit any single Methodological Grid to monopolise the full breadth of knowable reality.
