The Subsea Climate Paradox: Thermal Pollution, Electromagnetic Disruption, and Grid Weaponization in Transoceanic HVDC Infrastructure

Abstract

As global decarbonization mandates accelerate alongside the unprecedented power demands of artificialintelligence (AI) compute infrastructure, transoceanic High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) subsea power gridsare increasingly advocated as a solution to regional energy intermittency. Proponents argue that cross-bordersubsea cables can wheel renewable electricity across continents, balancing global supply and demand. Thispaper presents a critical framework demonstrating that the transoceanic subsea grid paradigm introduces fatalphysical, ecological, and geopolitical contradictions—a phenomenon defined here as the Subsea ClimateParadox.1. Physically, resistive power loss over multi-thousand-kilometer subsea lines converts underwater conduitsinto high-capacity marine radiators, generating localized thermal pollution in benthic zones. 2. Ecologically, the resulting high-intensity anthropogenic Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) blindfold electro-receptive and geomagnetic marine fauna, disrupting vital migratory and foraging corridors. 3. Geopolitically, reliance on real-time subsea power imports exchanges traditional storable energydependencies for immediate "kill-switch" vulnerabilities, exposing host nations to catastrophic grid sabotageand state-level extortion.We conclude that transoceanic subsea power networks represent an unsustainable transfer of terrestrial energyburdens onto fragile marine ecosystems and national security frameworks. Policy and capital must shift awayfrom transoceanic grid expansion toward sovereign, high-density, 24/7 baseload power generation—specificallyterrestrial and floating Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Power-to-X (P2X) chemical energy carriers.
