Open access0 citations

Abstract

HRMARS - Edutainment is an instructional approach widely applied in Islamic Education. This approach makes teaching more engaging and enjoyable. Accordingly, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and challenges of the edutainment approach. Based on the findings of the reviewed articles, several recommendations were identified to improve its implementation. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were employed to achieve this objective. The initial search process, using the Scopus and Google Scholar databases, identified a total of 1,470 potentially relevant articles. Subsequently, several inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied during the screening process to ensure that only articles aligned with the objectives of the study were selected. As a result, 16 articles published in reputable journals were included in the final analysis. The findings indicate that the edutainment approach promotes more positive emotions, greater interest, and more favourable attitudes among students. It is hoped that the findings of this study will encourage teachers to enhance their pedagogical practices to improve students' academic achievement through the implementation of the edutainment approach. Islamic Education teachers may also refer to this systematic literature review as a guide for implementing edutainment in their classrooms. Furthermore, the support of all stakeholders is essential in enabling teachers to implement the edutainment approach effectively in schools. Therefore, future research should further expand and integrate studies on edutainment to identify emerging issues related to its implementation.
