Aesthetic Rehabilitation of Partial Finger Amputation Using Silicone Prosthesis: A Clinical Report
Abstract
AbstractBackground: Partial finger amputation can result in significant aesthetic, functional, and psychological impairment, particularly in young individuals. Silicone prostheses offer a conservative, cost-effective, and aesthetically pleasing solution for restoring the appearance of missing digits when surgical reconstruction is not feasible or desired.Case Presentation: A 25-year-old female patient presented with a partially amputated left thumb resulting in compromised hand aesthetics and reduced self-confidence. Clinical examination revealed a well-healed residual thumb stump with adequate soft tissue support for prosthetic rehabilitation. An impression of the affected digit was made using irreversible hydrocolloid impression material, and a wax pattern was fabricated and evaluated for fit and contour. A custom-made silicone prosthesis was fabricated using intrinsically and extrinsically colored medical-grade silicone to closely match the patient's skin tone and anatomical characteristics. The prosthesis was retained using a snug fit over the residual stump. The final restoration demonstrated satisfactory esthetics, comfort, and adaptation.Conclusion: Custom-fabricated silicone finger prostheses provide an effective and non-invasive treatment option for patients with partial finger amputations. The prosthesis restored the natural appearance of the thumb, improved the patient's confidence, and enhanced overall quality of life. Silicone prosthetic rehabilitation remains a valuable alternative for achieving predictable aesthetic outcomes in digit defects.
