Adaptive Social Stress Calibration in Adolescence

Abstract

Adolescence is characterized by heightened stress reactivity alongside ongoing maturation of regulatory neural systems, particularly those governing social evaluation. Existing models of adolescent stress primarily emphasize outcome-based measures such as anxiety reduction or peak stress magnitude, often overlooking the dynamic regulation of stress responses across repeated exposures. This paper proposes Adaptive Social Stress Calibration (ASSC), a developmental theoretical framework positing that repeated exposure to structured, socially evaluative challenges—such as public speaking, debate, and leadership contexts—can recalibrate stress-response dynamics during adolescence. Crucially, ASSC does not conceptualize stress as inherently maladaptive; rather, it distinguishes between stress presence and stress dysregulation. The framework argues that during adolescence, a sensitive period for stress-system plasticity, predictable and goal-directed social evaluation may promote more efficient recovery, reduced response variability, and improved regulatory consistency, without suppressing normative stress reactivity. Drawing on literature from developmental neuroscience, stress physiology, and social-evaluative threat research, this paper synthesizes existing findings into a novel conceptual model that emphasizes trajectories over outcomes. Hypothetical scenarios are presented to illustrate how divergent exposure histories may shape stress calibration despite similar developmental timing. By reframing educational performance contexts as biologically meaningful regulatory inputs, ASSC offers a new lens for understanding experience-dependent stress regulation and provides a theoretically grounded foundation for future empirical research in adolescent populations.
