The Shaping of Social Interaction with the Virtual World: An Examination of the Impact of Online Gaming on Adolescent Boys

Abstract

This study explores the multifaceted relationship between online gaming and the construction of social identity among adolescents. Drawing upon social identity theory, the research investigates how online gaming environments serve as platforms for identity exploration, social interaction, and community building. The study examines the ways in which adolescents negotiate their identities within these virtual spaces, considering factors such as gender, social status, and in-game achievements. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature and empirical studies, the research identifies both the potential benefits and risks associated with online gaming in relation to adolescent identity development. The findings suggest that online gaming can provide opportunities for self-discovery, social support, and skill development, but also pose challenges related to cyberbullying, social isolation, and addiction. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding the complex interplay between online and offline identities and the need for interventions that promote healthy gaming habits and positive social interactions.
