The Masstige of Movement: How Mass Endurance Events Democratize Status Signaling in the Era of Pharmaceutical Weight Loss
Abstract
The global commercialization of GLP-1 receptor agonists (e.g., semaglutide, tirzepatide) has fundamentallyaltered the socio-economic value of body composition. Historically, achieving a lean physique served as apotent status symbol, signaling personal discipline, temporal freedom, and financial capital. Aspharmaceutical interventions diminish the scarcity and physical effort associated with weight reduction, thispaper introduces the "Biological Authenticity" framework to explain a paradoxical social trend: theexplosive, high-cost public demand for mass endurance events (marathons, obstacle races, street runningcrews). We argue that the democratization of weight loss via pharmacology has shifted social status signaling from somatic outcomes (the lean body) to embodied process (voluntary physical suffering and self-regulation). Mass endurance events function as a "Masstige" (mass-market luxury) channel, allowing participants to purchase verified, non-pharmacological status credentials at accessible price points.
