The Rediscovery of the Obvious: A Carlo‑Field Analysis of Academic Amnesia in Cognitive Science
Abstract
This paper presents a Carlo‑Field critique of modern cognitive science’s tendency to rediscover obvious truths and frame them as novel insights. Using the recent publication “Goals Shape Dynamics of Attention and Selection for Value-Based Decision-Making” as a case study, we demonstrate how rich, ecologically valid human behaviour is routinely collapsed into trivial laboratory findings such as “people look at things they care about.” Through Pancake Collapse Theory, the Goal‑Attention Identity Function, and the Carlo Reset Operator, we formalise the mechanisms by which Academic Amnesia emerges and propagates. The paper concludes with a reflective epiphany: upon first reading the target study, the author entered a state of flux, believing a profound discovery had been made — only to realise moments later that the insight was something even an 11‑year‑old nephew already knew. This work serves as both a satire and a methodological warning, urging cognitive science to re-engage with lived cognition before the pancake becomes too flat to rescue.
