Abstract

Artificial Desert Archipelago Theory (ADAT) proposes a conceptual environmental and geoengineering framework for addressing water scarcity, desertification, and increasing thermal stress in arid and hyper-arid regions. The central concept is to investigate whether strategically designed networks of artificial inland water bodies, distributed across desert environments as an “artificial archipelago,” could contribute to localized and regional environmental modification through enhanced evaporation, moisture recycling, thermal buffering, and interactions with atmospheric circulation. Rather than proposing a single large-scale intervention, ADAT emphasizes a distributed network approach in which the geometry, spacing, size, depth, water source, and geographic placement of artificial water bodies become design variables that can be optimized according to climatic, hydrological, ecological, and energy constraints. The framework is presented as a testable research hypothesis rather than an established climate-engineering solution. Its feasibility must be evaluated through atmospheric modeling, water and energy balance calculations, evaporation-loss analysis, environmental impact assessment, salinity management, and controlled pilot studies. The broader objective is to explore unconventional but physically testable approaches to mitigating water stress and desertification before these challenges become increasingly difficult to manage under future climate conditions.
