Abstract

AbstractNickel titanium (NiTi) alloys have revolutionized endodontic instrumentation since their introduction in the late 1980s. Their unique properties, including superelasticity, shape memory, and phase transformation behavior, allow rotary instruments to negotiate curved and complex root canals with greater safety and efficiency than stainless-steel files. Continuous advancements in metallurgy have focused on improving flexibility, cyclic fatigue resistance, cutting efficiency, and clinical safety. Modern developments include surface modification techniques such as plasma immersion ion implantation, titanium oxide coating, thermal nitridation, cryogenic treatment, and electropolishing, as well as thermo-mechanical treatments that alter the phase composition of NiTi alloys. These innovations have led to the development of M-Wire, R-Phase, Controlled Memory (CM) Wire, and contemporary heat-treated systems such as Vortex Blue, ProTaper Gold, WaveOne Gold, and HyFlex EDM. This review summarizes the evolution of NiTi metallurgy and its clinical implications in endodontics.
