Matricing and Wedging in Restorative Dentistry - A Comprehensive Review
Abstract
AbstractThe restoration of tooth structure lost to caries, trauma, or wear requires not only appropriate material selection but also precise control of tooth form, proximal contact, and marginal integrity. Matricing and wedging are foundational techniques in operative and restorative dentistry that enable clinicians to recreate natural tooth anatomy during direct restorations. The matrix provides a temporary wall to contain and shape the restorative material, while wedges ensure proper gingival adaptation and contribute to tooth separation.Since their introduction in the 19th century, both systems have evolved considerably from rudimentary hand shaped metal bands and wooden wedges to sophisticated anatomically precontoured sectional matrices, spring loaded separating rings, and elastomeric wedges designed for superior gingival sealing. This review examines the historical development, anatomy of proximal contacts and contours, classification and clinical applications of matrix systems, and the various wedging techniques employed in contemporary practice. Recent advances, current limitations, and future directions are also discussed.
