From Scattered Training to Structured Support: Building a Researcher-Centred Publication Advisory Service

Abstract

In light of the growing complexity of scientific publishing, targeted support for researchers is essential. A publication advisory service offers a central point of contact for questions on publishing research results. As a small institutional library, the BfR Library recognises this as an opportunity to strengthen its strategic position and increasing its visibility by providing tailored, practice-oriented services. Until now, the institute has lacked systematic publication support, only offering occasional training. This project addresses that gap, starting with a survey to identify needs and challenges of researchers. Based on the results, we are developing tailored consulting and training programmes covering open access publishing, journal selection, copyright/licensing and open data requirements. The service and its internal infrastructure (documentation, guidelines, communication channels) will be continuously evaluated and improved, with professional expertise ensured through ongoing specialised training in scientific publishing. This poster shows how smaller libraries can develop focused, agile publication advisory services grounded in researchers’ actual decision-making processes. By aligning services with researchers’ workflows, we can establish ourself as practical, strategic partners in scholarly publishing. This poster presents an example for similarly sized institutions to help them stay relevant and support their research communities effectively.
