Phase IA Cultural Resources Survey for the Removal of Trees Intruding into the Imaginary Flight Surfaces at Maxfield, Lakehurst

Abstract

The U.S. Air Force contracted the HDR and Tehama Joint Venture and its subcontractor, Tepa LLC., to complete a Phase IA identification-level cultural resources survey of the area of potential effects (APE) for the proposed removal of trees intruding into the imaginary flight surfaces surrounding the Maxfield airfield at JB MDL, Jackson Township, Ocean County. This study was completed in accordance with Section 106 of NHPA and NJHPO guidelines for archaeological survey. Completed between July 17, 2024, archaeological field investigations included pedestrian reconnaissance, photographic documentation of existing conditions, an assessment of archaeological sensitivity and an assessment of potential effects to one NRHP eligible historic property (28OC178). Phase IA survey recommended limits on ground disturbing activities, including the use of heavy equipment, within the estimated boundaries of 28OC178. The survey assessed the remaining sections of the APE with low sensitivity for prehistoric archaeological sites and medium sensitivity for historic archaeological sites.
