Historic Structure Report of the Matthew Jones House (Building 1611) at Fort Eustis, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia

Abstract

This Historic Structure Report presents the results of a historic building documentation and condition assessment of theMatthew Jones House (Building 1611) at Fort Eustis, conducted on behalf of the United States Department of the Air Force at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Newport News, Virginia. This study aids Joint Base Langley-Eustis in managing the historic properties under its jurisdiction, as required by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The Matthew Jones House was constructed circa 1725, prior to the formation of Fort Eustis. When the United States Army purchased Mulberry Island and surrounding land in 1918 for the formation of Camp Abraham Eustis, the Matthew Jones House came under the organization’s jurisdiction. the Matthew Jones House IS listed in the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C for its architectural significance and rarity. This Historic Structure Report includes the following regarding the Matthew Jones House: a summary of the building’s historic significance, construction history, and documentation; a synthesis of the previous structural and historical studies completed for the building; a detailed assessment of current building conditions, description of materials, mechanical systems, structural systems, and characterdefining exterior and interior features; identification of physical concerns requiring repair; and the submittal of cost effective recommendations on structural stabilization and prevention of further deterioration.
