Archaeological Monitoring, Fort Dix Multi-purpose Machine Gun Range, JBMDL, Manchester and Plumsted Townships, Ocean County

Abstract

On behalf of the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District contracted RGA, Inc. to complete a program of archaeological monitoring with the area of potential effects (APE) for the construction of the multi-purpose machine gun range in the Dix area at JB MDL, Manchester and Plumsted Townships, Ocean County. A professionally qualified archaeologist monitored heavy equipment excavation and vegetation clearing, grubbing, and grading in a range operations and control area, a target area, and in range areas proximate to wetlands associated with Gaunts Brook. This study was completed in accordance with Section 106 of NHPA and NJHPO guidelines for archaeological survey. Completed between May 26 and October 13, 2016, field investigations included pedestrian survey, archaeological monitoring of heavy equipment excavation and grading, and photographic documentation of work in progress within the APE. Archaeological monitoring did not identify potentially significant archaeological resources and recommended no further archaeological investigations.
