Starlink Distributed Microcell Network: A Proposed Extension to Starlink Mobile and Direct to Cell
Abstract
This technical concept paper proposes a distributed extension to Starlink Mobile and Direct to Cell in which a single Starlink broadband terminal serves as a root node for multiple remotely located cellular microcells. The architecture separates the satellite connection from the physical location of cellular coverage, allowing the Starlink terminal to remain where satellite visibility is strongest while terrestrial radio nodes are positioned where mobile coverage is needed. The proposal includes centrally coordinated remote microcells, terrain- and obstruction-aware deployment, adaptive handoff between terrestrial Starlink-backed cellular nodes and Direct to Cell satellite service, and potential applications in rural connectivity, agriculture, emergency response, industrial sites, transportation corridors, and remote communities. This paper acknowledges existing Starlink-backed cellular base-station and femtocell developments and focuses specifically on extending that architecture through multiple distributed radio nodes operating from a common Starlink backhaul connection. A proof-of-concept test architecture and engineering considerations are included. Independent engineering concept developed and authored by Steven Michael Creek.
