Summary of Work Conducted for the Air Force Civil Engineer Center – FY17

Abstract

In Fiscal Year 2017 (FY17), Argonne National Laboratory's (Argonne) Human Landscape Systems Department (formerly the Sociocultural Systems Department), Environmental Science Division (EVS) undertook a comprehensive series of projects supporting the Department of the Air Force (DAF) [previously, United States Air Force (USAF)] and the Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) in their cultural resources management efforts. Argonne's unique capabilities in cultural resource management, bolstered by extensive experience with the Department of Defense (DoD), were leveraged to address the diverse needs of DDAF installations across the nation. The projects encompassed archaeological resource identification and evaluation, historic property surveys, tribal consultation facilitation, and the development of integrated cultural resource management plans. Additionally, Argonne's expertise in geospatial analysis and digital curation played a pivotal role in enhancing the documentation and accessibility of cultural resources data. This document provides a detailed account of the tasks executed, the methodologies employed, and the outcomes achieved, reflecting Argonne's commitment to preserving cultural heritage while supporting military priorities. This document outlines the scope, objectives, and accomplishments of these tasks, which were designed to meet the requirements set forth in key legislative requirements including the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) as well as DoD and DAF guidance including Department of Air Force Manual (DAFMAN) 32-7003 ]previously Department of Air Force Instruction (DAFI) 32-7065], Department of Defense Instruction (DoDI) 4715.16, and DAFI 90-2002 (previously AFI 90-2002).
