Relation Before Relata: A Relational-Primitivist Ontology of Individuation, Perspective, and Presence

Abstract

A persistent assumption holds that things exist first and relations obtain between them. This paper develops the alternative — relational primitivism — on which relational organization is prior to the entities within it, and a thing is a pattern in a relational structure stable enough to be individuated as one. From a single relational primitive and four openly stated posits we build individuation, persistence, and the localized perspectives from which a world appears. The method throughout is to decompose the overloaded terms of the debate — consciousness, experience, observer — which dissolves the pseudo-problems bred by term-fusion while isolating, rather than dissolving, the one genuinely hard residue: intrinsic presence. That residue we type as an open trilemma — presence generated, disclosed, or no real question at all — leaning toward the disclosed reading as a fit and not a proof, and arguing that structural description cannot decide it, since the live options predict the same structure. A closing section draws out one consequence — that rival total pictures may be read as partial resolutions of one structure rather than competitors, endorsing none of their content — before the paper locates the view among its neighbours and closes on the bridge from relation to relativity: a door, we propose, not the door.
