Between Manila and Berlin: Botica de Santa Cruz, R. Fuess, and the Wartime Geography of Scientific Commerce, 1940

Open access0 citations

Abstract

This paper examines a 1940 commercial correspondence between Botica de Santa Cruz in Manila and the German precision-instrument manufacturer R. Fuess in Berlin-Steglitz. Using the surviving envelope alongside contemporary advertisements, archival records, scientific catalogs, and postal-history sources, it reconstructs Botica de Santa Cruz’s role as a supplier of laboratory, medical, optical, and scientific equipment in the Philippines. The study also explores the letter’s wartime routing via Siberia, German censorship markings, and the broader transnational networks through which scientific instruments, commercial information, and technical capability circulated between Manila and Europe on the eve of the Pacific War.
