PickCru – Original Educational Strategy Card Game Based on Transformation, Resource Management, and Learning

Abstract

PickCru is an original strategic and educational card game created by Doumbia Amara in Côte d’Ivoire, Africa. The game combines transformation, resource management, strategic thinking, observation, decision-making, and learning through an accessible and interactive gaming experience. The central principle of PickCru is based on the progressive transformation of incomplete, weak, insufficient, or deformed elements into improved, developed, or perfected states through the use of appropriate resources. Players must identify transformation opportunities, understand the needs of different elements, manage available resources, anticipate possible developments, and make strategic decisions at the right moment. Beyond entertainment, PickCru has been designed as a learning-through-play experience. Its mechanics encourage players to develop important cognitive and educational skills, including logical reasoning, observation, analysis, anticipation, memory, planning, problem-solving, resource management, strategic adaptation, and decision-making. Players learn by actively manipulating cards, experimenting with different possibilities, observing consequences, and adapting their strategies throughout the game. The educational dimension of PickCru is particularly connected to the understanding of transformation, development, resources, living organisms, environmental relationships, food chains, and natural balances. Through its game mechanics, players can explore the idea that development requires appropriate conditions and resources. The game therefore creates a playful connection between strategic thinking and concepts that can be related to life sciences, environmental education, ecology, resource management, and systems thinking. PickCru also introduces a symbolic representation of evolution: an initial state can become an improved state when the appropriate conditions and resources are provided. This principle allows the game to transform an abstract concept into a concrete and interactive experience. Players are not simply collecting cards; they become active participants in processes of transformation, development, and strategic progression. The game is structured around three progressive levels of play: Level 1 – Introduction: discovery of the fundamental transformation and resource-management principles. Level 2 – Advanced Strategy: development of anticipation, planning, risk management, positioning, and protection of achievements. Level 3 – Complete PickCru Experience: increased interaction, suspense, strategic tension, and mechanisms inspired by relationships between elements and food chains. The game is intended for 2 to 5 players and is recommended for players aged 8 years and older, subject to adjustment following testing phases. It can potentially be used in family settings, schools, educational activities, game clubs, scientific workshops, cultural activities, and other learning environments. PickCru currently consists of 285 cards, organized into Transformation cards, Resource cards, and Reward cards. The project includes a structured official rulebook, a defined game universe, an original transformation-based mechanic, a progressive difficulty system, and significant potential for educational, family, strategic, and commercial development. From an educational perspective, PickCru aims to demonstrate that a board or card game can simultaneously entertain, stimulate reflection, transmit knowledge, develop cognitive abilities, and encourage active learning. Its approach is based on experimentation: players learn through their own decisions, successes, mistakes, observations, and strategic adaptations. The project also has potential for further development through educational adaptations, new card collections, additional game levels, expansions, digital applications, multilingual versions, and professional publishing. This Zenodo record presents the general concept and educational potential of PickCru. The complete official rulebook contains the detailed technical rules and mechanisms required for the complete operation and development of the game.
