Rainbow Colors – Original Educational Board Game for Learning Color Theory Through Strategy and Play
Abstract
Rainbow Colors is an original strategic and educational board game created by Doumbia Amara in Côte d’Ivoire, Africa. The game combines color theory, strategic thinking, movement, card capturing, observation, memory, logic, creativity, and decision-making in an interactive learning environment. The central educational principle of Rainbow Colors is to transform the learning of colors from a theoretical activity into an active and practical experience. Players progressively discover and apply the relationships between primary, secondary, and tertiary colors while using these concepts as genuine strategic tools during gameplay. Rather than simply memorizing color combinations, players learn by observing, experimenting, making decisions, testing combinations, and experiencing the consequences of their choices. The game is designed around an educational progression. Players begin with primary colors and gradually advance toward secondary and tertiary colors through successful combinations. This progression provides a concrete way to explore fundamental principles of color theory and helps reinforce the understanding and memorization of color relationships through repeated play. Rainbow Colors also develops a range of cognitive and educational skills, including observation, visual memory, concentration, logical reasoning, critical thinking, anticipation, planning, problem-solving, strategic adaptation, and decision-making. Because players must understand color relationships in order to capture cards and progress, knowledge becomes an integral part of the gameplay rather than a separate learning activity. From a pedagogical perspective, Rainbow Colors promotes active learning through play. Players are encouraged to learn through experimentation, manipulation, observation, repetition, strategic interaction, and constructive error. The game can therefore serve as a complementary educational resource for introducing or reinforcing concepts related to color theory, visual arts, creative activities, logic, and cognitive development. The game is intended for families, children, schools, teachers, leisure centers, educational organizations, game clubs, creative workshops, and players interested in educational and strategy games. Its accessible visual approach and progressive structure make it suitable for both recreational and educational contexts, while its strategic mechanics provide additional depth for more experienced players. Rainbow Colors is currently developed at the functional prototype stage. The project includes a playable physical prototype, a complete technical rulebook, an educational and graphic identity based on color theory, and a structured game system combining learning and strategy. Further playtesting and development are planned to refine the balance, components, illustrations, and professional edition. The project also has potential for educational adaptations, complementary learning materials, digital applications, and future game developments centered on learning through play.
