ROCK OF THE CLIFF – Original Strategic, Educational and Family Board Game

Open access0 citations

Abstract

ROCK OF THE CLIFF is an original strategic, educational, and family board game created by Doumbia Amara in Côte d’Ivoire, Africa. The game immerses players in a fictional village threatened by a massive rock falling from a cliff. Each player becomes the leader of a large family and must protect family members, animals, houses, and resources while using a personal cubic rock as a strategic tool against opponents. The game combines strategy, tactical movement, risk management, anticipation, protection, decision-making, and capture mechanics. Its central innovation is a cubic rock pawn that moves through pivoting and rolling movements, creating an evolving trajectory and requiring players to anticipate the consequences of their actions. The game board also functions as an active strategic environment, with different terrain zones influencing the movement and power of the rocks. A major strength of ROCK OF THE CLIFF is its educational dimension. The game is designed not only as a source of entertainment but also as a playful learning tool that encourages players to develop analytical thinking, strategic reasoning, spatial awareness, anticipation, problem-solving, decision-making, risk assessment, priority management, and adaptation to changing situations. Through its natural-disaster scenario, the game introduces accessible reflections on prevention, environmental risks, population protection, organization, and community responsibility. Players learn to evaluate situations, identify priorities, anticipate possible consequences, and make appropriate decisions under changing conditions. The protection of children, parents, elderly people, animals, and community resources gives strategic choices a meaningful human and educational dimension. ROCK OF THE CLIFF can therefore be considered for use in family activities, schools, educational workshops, game clubs, awareness programs, recreational activities, and other learning-oriented environments. It can support educational approaches related to strategy, logic, spatial reasoning, environmental awareness, risk management, applied mathematics, social interaction, and decision-making. The project currently includes a structured official rulebook, a developed narrative universe, defined game mechanics, organized game components, and a concept prepared for prototype production, testing, artistic development, and potential publication. Its universal theme of a community facing a natural hazard also gives the project potential for cultural and international development. This portfolio presents the identity, concept, universe, game materials, mechanics, innovations, educational benefits, development status, publishing potential, and investment opportunities associated with ROCK OF THE CLIFF.
