What You're Holding: The Case for Nervous System-Informed Object Design

Abstract

This working paper proposes a novel framework for designing everyday physical objects to support autonomic nervous system regulation. Drawing on affective neuroscience, somatic psychology, embodied cognition, and Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory, the author argues that all objects engage the human nervous system through touch, form, and behavioral affordances—whether or not these effects were intentionally designed. The paper identifies three primary regulatory pathways accessible through physical objects: tactile input (through mechanoreceptors and C-tactile afferents), breathing (through vagal tone and heart rate variability), and cognitive grounding (through affect labeling). A custom business card serves as a concrete case study, demonstrating how material choices (weighted cardstock, velvet texture, rounded corners), a guided somatic sequence (touch-based exploration, box breathing, environmental naming), and social context can transform an ordinary object into a portable, multi-modal regulation tool. Beyond the business card example, the paper offers a four-question framework for practitioners, designers, wellness professionals, and organizations seeking to apply nervous system-informed principles to any physical object in their practice or environment: What sensory channels does this object engage? What behaviors does its form invite? What is its relationship to safety and connection in context? Does it require attention to work, or does it work through presence?
