Temporal Somatics: How the Body Keeps Time — and Why Human Development Cannot Be Understood Without It

Abstract

This paper proposes Temporal Somatics — the study of how the living body holds, orients to, paces, and metabolizes time — as a distinct field, and argues that no theory of human development is complete without it. Its central law is temporal: the body's ceaseless signal that something is bad is, read over sufficient duration, the felt-sense of becoming. The nervous system cannot distinguish threat from transformation in the instant; both register as high-magnitude activation, and its default label for high magnitude is bad. But good is not an instant — it is a magnitude realized in the body under duration. Valence is therefore a function of the time-window over which a sensation is read. This explains why developmental models (Kegan, Graves/Beck & Cowan, Wilber, Dabrowski) have floated above the body: measured instantaneously, the soma only ever reports bad, so thinkers flee upward into cognition. Temporal Somatics reintegrates the body through the durational read, gives Dabrowski's positive disintegration its somatic mechanism, and supplies the somatic-temporal floor beneath Kegan's subject–object development: one cannot author a life while the body lives in a foreclosed future or a gripping past, because authoring requires a present long enough to write in.
