Engaging Youth in STEAM Through Benjamin Banneker–Inspired Community Learning Experiences

Abstract

Out-of-school learning spaces offer a powerful opportunity to immerse learners in culturally responsive STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) learning experiences. The three STEAM learning experiences presented in this article are interdisciplinary and provide learners with opportunities to engage in content-rich, culturally relevant experiences while valuing their multiple identities, supporting deep learning, creativity, and the application of knowledge. These projects were centered around the work of Benjamin Banneker, a man who had a passion for the sciences and arts and integrated them into his life in meaningful ways. These comprehensive projects that are connected to the history of STEAM can present learners with the opportunity to problematize current events, ask challenging questions about the world around them, and propose solutions to bring about change. We developed these projects around Benjamin Banneker, identifying him and others with these qualities as STEAM-iticians. By regularly incorporating STEAM into out-of-school learning spaces, K-12 learners have the opportunity to connect their creativity with their lived experiences in- and outside of their classrooms to build their identities as STEAM-iticians and a passion for scientific inquiry.
