It opens with Nikolai Vavilov's 1920s mapping of global crop origin centres, which independently confirmed the Indian subcontinent as one of the world's richest, a conclusion classical Sanskrit agronomic texts like Krishi Parashara and Surapala's Vrikshayurveda had effectively assumed a thousand years earlier while detailing mixed cropping, soil science, and seed storage as testable technique. It examines sacred groves, 100,000 to 150,000 community-protected forest patches functioning as unofficial gene banks, and three living systems, Koraput, Kuttanad, and Kashmir's saffron heritage, that carry UN FAO certification as globally significant today.
