THE STRUCTURAL EMERGENCE OF SELF‑AWARENESS
Abstract
This paper proposes a minimal structural model of consciousness in which awareness develops into self‑awareness through four sequential layers: minimal awareness, embodiment, continuity, and recursive self‑recognition. The model reframes self‑awareness as a cognitive structure rather than a metaphysical property, defining it as awareness that has learned itself from within. The paper also examines the temporary subjective mismatch between the reflective observer and the biological organism that can occur when self‑awareness develops rapidly, interpreting this as cognitive‑biological desynchronisation rather than dualism. The framework provides a universal, substrate‑independent account of how consciousness becomes a self, offering a clear structural foundation for future work in cognitive science, philosophy of mind, and systems theory.
