The state of gerontological social work research in Türkiye as a rapidly ageing country

Abstract

This systematic review maps 241 graduate social work theses in Türkiye (1988–2025) using PRISMA and SPIDER protocols in order to chart the thematic and methodological landscape of this emerging body of scholarship. The analysis reveals a paradigm shift from traditional ‘custodial-medical’ models towards ‘rights-based and participatory’ frameworks. While thematic diversification accelerated post-2012, significant theoretical maturation – centred on ecological systems and empowerment – emerged after 2018. Recent literature increasingly integrates intersectional topics, including refugee elders, LGBTI + individuals, and digital inequality, aligning with social justice missions. Although Turkish academic production has increasingly complemented descriptive work with more analytical designs, the study concludes that a transition towards intervention-oriented experimental and longitudinal research is essential for evidence-based practice and international competitiveness.
