Science Keeps Us Grounded, Philosophy Keeps Us Human
Abstract
Science Keeps Us Grounded, Philosophy Keeps Us Human is a bold, interdisciplinary exploration of behavior, consciousness, freedom, meaning, and what it means to live well in a world that shapes us before we ever choose it. Drawing from behavior analysis, psychology, philosophy, and lived experience, Cory argues that human beings are neither disembodied souls nor reducible machines, but participatory, meaning-making organisms embedded in nature, culture, and relationship. Through thirteen interconnected chapters, the book examines agency, language, technology, authority, suffering, and identity while developing a provisional framework called Grounded Humanism. Rather than offering false certainty, it invites readers into a rigorous but humane way of thinking. One that honors evidence without losing sight of dignity, complexity, and personal experience. This is a book for readers who want to better understand what shapes them, what freedom can become, and how science and philosophy can work together to help us become more fully human.
