Using Digital Technologies in Reducing Caregiving Burden in Memory Care: Trends, Strategies, and Opportunities
Abstract
Caregiver burden in memory care arises from emotional strain, cognitive overload, and logistical complexity. Emerging digital technologies offer promising pathways to reduce this burden. This commentary synthesizes trends, challenges, and opportunities for integrating technology into caregiver support systems. Research trends have shaped memory care by incorporating human centered design to reduce cognitive overload and streamline caregiving tasks, as well as integrating individual and ecological predictors. Evidence from systematic reviews reveals that digital interventions have moderate short term effects on caregiver burden and stress. Future and collaborative research should resolve inconsistent burden measures, identify sources of heterogeneity in interventions, gather longitudinal data, reduce digital literacy barriers, and improve the representativeness of diverse populations.
