Designing for the Mind: How Cognitive Science Explains What Makes Educational Technology Effective

Abstract

Educational technology is designed and marketed primarily around measures of engagement, while the cognitive science of how people actually learn is comparatively underused in product design. This article reviews six well-established findings from cognitive and educational psychology - retrieval practice, spaced practice, cognitive load theory, multimedia learning principles, instructional feedback, and guided vs. unguided instruction - and translates each into concrete implications for the design of digital learning tools, closing with a compact framework for evaluating whether a learning product is built around how memory and attention actually work.
