Olanzapine-associated Hair Loss in an Adolescent: A Case Report

Abstract

Drug-induced alopecia is a reversible but distressing adverse effect of psychotropic medications. Although most commonly associated with mood stabilizers, hair loss has also been reported, albeit infrequently, with antipsychotics. Olanzapine is widely used in adolescent psychiatry and is generally considered safe and effective. However, alopecia related to its use is rarely described, particularly in adolescents. We report a case of a 16-year-old female with schizophrenia who developed diffuse hair loss following treatment with olanzapine, with complete resolution after discontinuation.
