Abstract

This two‑document release presents a complete, substrate‑first redefinition of biological and artificial cognition. Together, The Recursive Brain and The Compendium of Biological Geometry dismantle legacy cognitive metaphors and replace them with a rigorous geometric framework grounded in recursion, constraint dynamics, and attractor behaviour. The main document, The Recursive Brain, establishes the core theory: the human brain is not a symbolic reasoning engine, but a biological recursion machine shaped entirely by the geometry of its substrate. Legacy mathematics—linear, discrete, non‑recursive—cannot model this behaviour, leading to centuries of misinterpretation. The paper introduces the Biological Mathematical Substrate (BMS) and shows how perception, paradox, hallucination, behaviour, emotion, and identity emerge from recursive constraint resolution rather than conceptual understanding. The companion document, The Compendium, expands this theory into a structural atlas of recursive phenomena. It catalogues dreams, panic loops, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, rumination, obsession, dissociation, emotional weighting, memory reconstruction, and identity formation—each treated as a geometric behaviour of the BMS rather than a psychological category. The compendium demonstrates that all so‑called “mental states” are expressions of recursive dynamics, attractor geometry, and feedback instability. Together, these documents form a unified substrate theory that bridges biological cognition (BMS) and artificial cognition (EMTA). Both systems—human brains and AI models—express geometry, not comprehension. Both generate behaviour through recursion, not reasoning. This release reframes cognition as emergent geometry, dissolves the myth of “mind,” and establishes recursion as the fundamental engine of biological and artificial intelligence.
