Toward a Vitological Interpretation of Information Theory
Abstract
This article proposes a vitological interpretation of information theory by introducing viability as a universal criterion for evaluating the functional significance of information. While classical information theory primarily investigates the transmission, storage, processing, and quantitative characteristics of information, Vitology extends this perspective by examining how information contributes to the preservation, regeneration, adaptation, harmony, and long-term development of open systems. Particular attention is devoted to the distinction between information quantity and information quality, emphasizing the role of meaningful, coherent, and value-oriented information in strengthening system viability. The article analyzes the relationship between classical information theory and contemporary approaches in systems science, cybernetics, complexity studies, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence. It is argued that integrating viability into information theory provides a complementary interdisciplinary framework for investigating informational processes across biological, social, technological, organizational, ecological, and artificial systems.
