Depression as Entropic Collapse of Self-Organization: A Cognitive Reflex Therapy Perspective

Abstract

Contemporary accounts of major depressive disorder remain substantially organized around symptom taxonomy — the cataloguing of phenomenological features specified by the DSM-5 and ICD-11 — without providing a satisfactory mechanistic account of the systemic dynamics that produce and sustain depressive states. The present paper proposes a reconceptualization of depression not as a disorder of mood in isolation, but as a systemic failure of self-organizing psychological coherence. Drawing on Cognitive Reflex Therapy (CRT), a transdiagnostic clinical framework developed to address the automaticity of maladaptive psychological patterns, this paper advances the thesis that depressive states represent an entropic collapse — a loss of ordered, adaptive information processing — across the cognitive, behavioral, and identity domains of the psychological system. CRT integrates predictive processing theory (Friston, 2010), approach-avoidance motivational dynamics (Gray & McNaughton, 2000; Carver & Scheier, 1998), and a triadic identity model structured around the layers of I Have, I Do, and I Am, to explain how depression emerges when the organism's capacity to generate low-entropy, goal-directed psychological states is overwhelmed by unresolvable prediction error and chronic behavioral avoidance. Central to this theoretical formulation is the mathematical identity function F(x) = x, which operationalizes the I Am state as a fixed-point attractor in psychological state space — a condition of minimal self-discrepancy, maximal systemic synergy, and stable self-organization (Haken, 1983). When depressive entropy disrupts this attractor, the self-organizing system degrades progressively toward incoherence, producing the full clinical presentation of major depression: anhedonia, psychomotor retardation, negative self-referential cognition, and motivational collapse. Clinical implications of this framework aresubstantial. They include entropy-reducing interventions targeting three sequential domains: cognitive reflex suppression (reducing the precision of pathological prior beliefs), approach behavior reinstatement (generating corrective active inference), and identity attractor reactivation (restoring F(x) = x). The present manuscript articulates the theoretical foundations of this model, integrates it with established neuroscientific and psychological frameworks, and outlines directions for empirical validation through computational psychiatry and randomized controlled trial designs.
