Abstract

FINDING: Old Babylonian sexagesimal (base-60) system enabled exact rational trigonometry on Plimpton 322, predating Greek methods by over 1000 years. | MATH: Base-60 place-value system; Plimpton 322 contains 15 rows of Pythagorean triples (a² + b² = c²) with exact sexagesimal ratios; key constants: 60 (base), 1/60, 1/3600. | CONNECTION: Base-60 directly yields 12-fold symmetry (60/5 = 12) and 6-fold rotational symmetry; sexagesimal fractions (e.g., 0;30 = 1/2, 0;45 = 3/4) align with harmonic ratios; 12-fold quasicrystallography from affine F4, B6, E6 root systems (Coxeter number 12 for E6, 6 for B6) shares the same 12-fold symmetry group. | DEPTH: 8 — Base-60 is not arbitrary; it is the smallest number divisible by 1,2,3,4,5,6, enabling exact fractions for 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, which are fundamental to harmonic ratios (0.5, 0.333..., 0.25, 0.2, 0.1666...). The 12-fold symmetry in quasicrystals (from affine Coxeter groups) mirrors the 12-fold division of the circle in Babylonian astr Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
