Abstract

FINDING: Quasicrystals exhibit icosahedral symmetry with forbidden 5-fold rotational order, realized via irrational projection from higher-dimensional lattices (e.g., E8 root system in 8D). MATH: - Icosahedral symmetry group: \( H_3 \) (Coxeter group), order 120. - Forbidden rotation: \( 2\pi/5 \) (72°), disallowed in periodic 3D crystals. - Projection from 8D E8 lattice to 3D yields quasicrystal diffraction with golden ratio \(\phi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618\) as the irrational scaling factor. - Quaternion orientational order parameter: \( Q = q_0 + q_1 i + q_2 j + q_3 k \), with \( |Q| = 1 \), encoding icosahedral symmetry via binary icosahedral group (order 120).
