The Paternal Life-Stage Predisposition Modulation Hypothesis: A Conceptual Extension of Paternal Preconception Inheritance to Domain-Congruent Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral Predispositions

Abstract

Evidence from animal models and a limited human literature indicates that paternal conditions before conception can alter sperm molecular features and influence offspring development. Existing work has focused mainly on diet, obesity, toxicants, stress, trauma, exercise, and disease-related outcomes. This paper proposes the Paternal Life-Stage Predisposition Modulation (PLSPM) Hypothesis: a father is not a biologically invariant source across his reproductive life, and sustained, identity-shaping cognitive, behavioral, psychological, or physiological transformations may modify his time-specific germline state. Such modification may probabilistically bias broad predispositions in offspring conceived after the transformation in a direction functionally congruent with the domain of the paternal change, relative to offspring conceived before it. The hypothesis does not propose transmission of memories, learned knowledge, occupations, moral acts, or complete behaviors. It predicts only a possible shift in latent tendencies such as novelty seeking, threat sensitivity, spatial learning, verbal-auditory sensitivity, reward responsiveness, impulse control, or stress reactivity. Its distinctive contribution is the combination of four elements: within-father life-stage comparison, sustained complex transformations rather than only toxic or metabolic exposures, domain-congruent offspring predispositions, and explicit separation of acquired germline modulation from pre-existing genetic liability and postnatal social transmission. The paper specifies competing explanations, falsification criteria, and a staged research program using longitudinal semen sampling, assisted reproduction in controlled animal models, and within-family human designs. The hypothesis remains unproven and should be treated as a testable conceptual framework rather than an established mechanism.
