How AI Chatbots Remember Context

Open access0 citations

Abstract

This mini research paper explores how AI chatbots maintain context during conversations using techniques such as context windows, conversation history, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and optional long-term memory. It explains the differences between human memory and AI memory, presents a simple experiment demonstrating contextual understanding, discusses real-world applications, outlines current limitations, and highlights future directions for AI memory systems. This paper was written as part of the Mini AI Research Series, an independent learning initiative aimed at exploring one AI topic at a time through concise, beginner-friendly research papers.
