Wigner-Dyson Ensembles: Universal Eigenvalue Statistics and Number Theory Connections — E8 Intelligence Research

Open access0 citations

Abstract

FINDING: Wigner-Dyson ensembles exhibit a universal trinity of eigenvalue statistics (GOE, GUE, GSE) indexed by Dyson index β = 1, 2, 4, with deep connections to number theory via the Riemann zeta function zeros. | MATH: Dyson index β ∈ {1,2,4} corresponds to orthogonal (real symmetric), unitary (Hermitian), and symplectic (quaternion self-dual) matrices. Level spacing distribution P(s) ∝ s^β exp(-c_β s^2) for small s. Pair correlation function for GUE: R_2(s) = 1 - (sin(πs)/(πs))^2. Montgomery-Odlyzko law: zeros of Riemann zeta function on critical line follow GUE statistics. | CONNECTION: β = 1,2,4 correspond to three classical division algebras over reals (R, C, H) — a trinity mirroring the three crystallographic root systems A_n, B_n/C_n, D_n. The sine kernel sin(πs)/(πs) is the universal scaling limit of eigenvalue correlations, linking to the 2D Coulomb gas at inverse temperature β. No direct golden ratio or base-60 appears, but the β trinity is a discrete harmonic pattern. | DEP Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
