Stomata Geometry as Photomask Pattern for Microscale Lithography: A Biomimetic Template Proposal for MEMS, Microfluidics, and Light-Gated Device Fabrication

Open access0 citations

Abstract

This technical note presents plant stomata geometry as an original, pre-optimized biomimetic pattern source for microscale lithographic photomasks. Bridging plant cell biology and microfabrication, it outlines how parameterized 2D stomatal footprints can be deployed in MEMS, microfluidics, and optical arrays. This technical note proposes a novel biomimetic pattern source for microscale photolithography: the direct abstraction and parameterization of plant stomata geometry as a photomask template. While biomimetic engineering in MEMS and microfluidics has traditionally drawn inspiration from 3D surface textures (e.g., shark skin riblets, lotus leaf hydrophobicity, bone lattices), the 2D aperture footprint of biological cellular complexes remains unexplored as a photolithographic design motif. This note establishes the geometric, dimensional, and functional parallels between plant stomata and microfabricated photomask apertures.
