Abstract
English Abstract:This paper employs the Community Cohesion Model and the Political Philosophy Cohesion Model to systematically compare four major civilizational types: China, Europe, Islam, and India. It argues that fundamental differences in their modes of establishing subjectivity stem from long-term geographical and climatic constraints. The extremity of geography and climate determines the form of subjectivity at the source—non-extreme climates (moderate challenges or mild environments) allowed human subjectivity to be established, while extreme climates (arid or humid) allowed theocratic subjectivity to dominate. Non-extreme civilizations (China and Europe) retained the tension between two opposing forces, forming a rhythmic evolutionary pattern and belonging to "generalist species"; extreme civilizations (Islam and India) were permanently solidified by a single philosophy, lacking rhythm and belonging to "specialist species." This difference corresponds to "completable dynamic deficiencies" versus "non-completable static deficiencies" in the Political Philosophy Cohesion Model. The paper further argues that the differing performances of these four civilizations in modern transitions stem not only from the presence of rhythm and the nature of deficiencies, but also from fundamental differences in the magnitude of external productivity shocks required to complete their transitions—Europe autonomously completed its retrieval in the Iron Age; China required the shock of the Second Industrial Revolution; Islam and India may require a Fourth Industrial Revolution-level shock to break their stagnation. This analytical framework provides a unified structural explanation for the divergent performances of these civilizations in modern transitions and their differentiated evolutionary paths.
