Row, Table, and Join Are Not the Foundations of Analytical Meaning
Abstract
Version 1.1 is a vocabulary revision, content-preserving: aligned with The Theory of Data, Version 4.0 — a measure is the governed family; a member of a measure is a governed series; a series is a typed binding of datums over one anchor. Nothing is altered in substance.Rows, tables, and joins are among the most useful inventions in computing — and insufficient as the foundational concepts of analytical meaning. This position develops the distinction: a table is a storage and presentation container; analytical meaning lives in typed values at typed coordinates — particles bound into atom members, members governed by atoms (measure families), populations governed by universes. A join is shown to bundle at least seven distinct analytical decisions (relationship, functionality, universe passage, value transport, multiplicity, restriction, frame construction) that the join syntax neither states nor checks, with fan-out as the canonical silent failure. The paper proposes the replacement primitives and shows what each familiar operation becomes when meaning, rather than storage, is foundational. Second in the datumwise position series.
