Abstract

English Abstract:During the Warring States period, all seven major states implemented reforms, yet their depths and outcomes varied drastically. Traditional explanations focus on monarchial competence, reformer talents, or regional cultural traditions—middle-level political attributions that fail to address the long-term material mechanisms underlying such differences. Based on the core mechanism of "geographical amplification of identical climatic shocks" within the Community Cohesion Model, this paper proposes a new explanatory framework: following the end of the Holocene Megathermal (circa 1100 BCE), East Asia entered a roughly 300-year cyclical oscillation of cold/warm and dry/wet phases. The same global climatic shock, filtered through the differentiated geographical, hydrological, and agricultural baselines of the seven states, generated a survival pressure gradient composed of three dimensions: precipitation variability, agricultural tolerance, and geopolitical openness. This gradient long-shaped the intensity of identification among the nobility with the monarch as the "supreme organizer for ensuring the survival of the community," which in turn determined the depth, persistence, and ultimate success or failure of each state's reforms. Qin's reforms were the most thorough and survived their architect, because the extreme survival pressure of Guanzhong forged a strong organizer identity. Its political philosophy was completely cohesive, active synthesis drove efficiency coefficient (η) toward 1, and the actual contribution of its effective productive population was fully activated. Chu and Qi failed as reforms died with their architects, stemming from insufficient organizer identity within low or middle identification gradients, causing η to be systematically diminished—even with comparable or superior resource endowments. After unifying China, Qin's forced imposition of the Guanzhong "strong organizer" model onto the empire encountered structural resistance from the patriarchal identity of the six eastern states—a classic case of extremely low Kernel Inheritability (H). This paper provides new long-term explanations for the mechanisms of Qin's unification and the historical genesis of the "Confucian skin and Legalist bones" governance model of the Chinese empire.
