The Epistemic Collapse Matrix (ECM): A Proposed Analytic Heuristic for Examining Structural Invisibility

Abstract

Version 2 supersedes the earlier independent ECM document. It removes diagnostic claims and clarifies that the ECM is a proposed analytic heuristic that has not been empirically validated or independently evaluated for interpretive consistency or practical utility. Readers should cite and rely on this revised version rather than the earlier version. The Epistemic Collapse Matrix (ECM) is proposed as an analytic heuristic for organizing questions about how epistemic, institutional, and computational systems may respond to information, experience, or expression that does not readily fit their prevailing categories, procedures, or representational formats. The ECM arranges three provisional dimensions—temporal, cognitive, and ethical—against three possible response patterns: omission, rejection, and overreaction. The matrix is intended to support structured inquiry into the relationship between an informational condition and a system response. It is not a validated taxonomy, diagnostic instrument, or proof that structural invisibility has occurred. Its cells are illustrative, may overlap, and require context-specific interpretation, consideration of alternative explanations, and, where relevant, the perspectives of affected persons or stakeholders. This short conceptual preprint defines the ECM’s scope, proposed use, limitations, and requirements for future research.
