Sustainable Development Through the Integration of Education, Green Finance, Agriculture, and Environmental Conservation: Empirical Evidence from Rural Bangladesh

Abstract

Rural Bangladesh sits at the intersection of high climate exposure, dense agrarian dependence and a rapidly formalising green financial system, making it an instructive laboratory for testing whether sustainable development outcomes improve when education, green finance, agriculture and environmental conservation are delivered as an integrated package rather than as parallel sectoral programmes. This study reports findings from a five-year, quasi-experimental field study conducted across six administrative divisions between 2019 and 2024. A multistage stratified sample of 1,240 farm households (624 treatment, 616 matched control) was surveyed at baseline and endline, complemented by 48 focus group discussions, 62 key informant interviews and administrative loan-performance records for 4,798 agricultural credit accounts. Outcomes were estimated using difference-in-differences with propensity-score matching, quantile regression and Cox proportional-hazards models, with a coupling-coordination model used to quantify inter-pillar synergy. Households receiving the integrated package recorded a 34.6% higher net farm income, 21.8% more food-secure months and a 28.4% higher savings rate than matched controls, while agro-chemical intensity fell 34.4% and homestead tree cover rose from 11.2% to 30.9%. The difference-in-differences estimate for indexed net farm income was 32.1 points ( p < 0.001). Green agricultural loans were substantially less likely to become non-performing than conventional agricultural loans (log-rank χ² = 39.4, p < 0.001). Each additional year of household-head schooling raised the conservation behaviour score by 3.62 points, and the marginal effect of green credit was largest at upper-middle income quantiles, indicating that credit alone does not reach the poorest without a complementary education and grant layer. The evidence supports treating education as the binding enabler of green finance uptake, and green finance as the binding enabler of conservation-compatible agricultural intensification. A four-phase national roadmap to 2035 is proposed, with a benefit–cost ratio of 1.98 and an internal rate of return of 23.4% over a five-year horizon.
