The Cholinergic Floor: The Organ Beneath Everything

Abstract

This essay introduces the cholinergic floor — the acetylcholine-dependent neurochemical substrate governing parasympathetic access, selective attention, and the perceptual capacity to register abundance — as load-bearing infrastructure beneath cognition, behavior, and economics. Drawing on the cholinergic attention literature (Hasselmo; McGinley), choline-substrate physiology (Institute of Medicine; Zeisel), the inflammatory reflex (Tracey), and fascial and somatic research (Langevin; Levine; Berceli), it argues that the catalogued "biases" of behavioral economics are not fixed features of human nature but signatures of a depleted floor. A grounded floor yields not optimism but resolution — the perceptual bandwidth to register what is actually present.
