Fire Sphere Cycle (FSC) Earth System Coupling Model: A Unified Framework for Interpreting Life Origin and Evolution, Algal Productivity, Fossil Energy Enrichment, and Global Marine Mass Extinctions

Open access0 citations

Abstract

The Fire-Sediment Cycle (FSC) model proposes a unified Earth system framework linking life origin, Phanerozoic mass extinctions, and fossil energy accumulation to periodic paleowildfire activity. The model identifies wildfire as a planetary-scale endogenous regulatory agent, driven by four geological functions: mineral activation and nitrogen fixation via high-temperature combustion; terrestrial biodiversity regulation through a "refuge cage" effect; cross-basin organic carbon transport and burial; and long-term biotic decline that primes ecosystems for terminal exogenous catastrophes. The FSC establishes a "long-term endogenous disturbance + short-term exogenous pulse" dual evolutionary paradigm, integrating global stratigraphic records, geochemical proxies, and paleoecological datasets. This framework offers a complementary explanation for traditional catastrophe theories and provides testable predictions for paleoecological succession, global carbon cycling, and fossil energy exploration.
