Study of peroperative complications and post-operative complications in laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal repair in Bundelkhand region
Abstract
Background: Inguinal hernia remains a prevalent condition requiring surgical intervention, with laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) repair emerging as a widely accepted technique due to its advantages of faster recovery, reduced post-operative pain, and superior anatomical visualization. However, the procedure is not without complications, which vary based on surgical expertise and patient factors. There is limited regional data on these outcomes, especially from the Bundelkhand region. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence and pattern of intraoperative and post-operative complications associated with laparoscopic TAPP hernia repair in a tertiary care center in Bundelkhand. Materials and Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College, Jhansi, from October 2023 to March 2025. A total of 148 patients diagnosed with inguinal hernia and undergoing TAPP repair were enrolled. Patients were followed up for 6 months to assess peroperative and post-operative complications. Results: The most common intraoperative complication was peritoneal tear (54.2%). Other complications included hemorrhage (0.68%), nerve and spermatic cord injury (0.68% each), and anesthesia-related issues (2.03%). Postoperatively, pain (4.05%) and urinary retention (3.38%) were the most common early complications. Among late complications, seroma formation was the most frequent (41.89%), followed by chronic groin pain (9.46%) and recurrence (5.4%). Conclusion: TAPP repair is a safe and effective approach for inguinal hernia management, with most complications being minor and manageable. Surgical expertise, meticulous technique, and structured post-operative care are key to minimizing adverse outcomes in this population.
